FAQ

Where can I find material for my presentation?

I would suggest perusing popular magazines that would have a variety of full-page, color advertisements. You can also watch a little television, find a good commercial, and then more than likely, locate that commercial on YouTube.

Will I get Study Guides for Tests?

Yes. We will spend time reviewing the major concepts we have covered in class during the class session before the exams.
You may wish to look through the PowerPoint slides and class notes.
There will be no surprises on the tests.

There are countless free online news sites that you can search for interesting articles.

Here are a few I like to use for our journal articles:

www.csmonitor.com

www.abcnews.com

www.worldnetdaily.com

www.cnn.com

www.huffingtonpost.com

Where should I find my current events?
Why do I need this class if I'm not an English major?

Why? ...because you are a member of the human race and must rely on communication to interact effectively with others; you need to know how to think, reason, and express your ideas clearly and comprehensively. If you want to be taken seriously by other people--no matter what your buisness or major--then you need to sound like you know what you are talking about. Critical thinking skills enable you to do that.

Just a few options:

  • Enter the SCC Writing Contest with an original poem, short story, and or research paper (5 points)

  • Enroll in and complete the English N91 Writing Center course (15 points)

  • Attend any two Writing Center Workshops--see schedule in your syllabus (10 points)

  • Save your NQA coupon until the end of the semester (10 points)

Is there any extra credit for this course?

What if I am still struggling with grammar?

We don't devote a lot of time to reviewing grammar and punctuation rules because those are items you should have perfected (or at least improved upon) in English 101. If you have difficulties with revising and editing your essays, you should strongly consider signing up for the Writing Center course (English N91), so that you can get assistance from an English faculty member. See the English N91 flyer in your syllabus for more information.
